Governor Proclaims Leukemia Awareness Week

BY THE GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA

A PROCLAMATION

WHEREAS, leukemia is a cancer of the blood and bone marrow that disrupts the production of healthy blood cells, leading to weakened immunity, oxygenation challenges, and clotting difficulties; and

WHEREAS, leukemia is categorized into acute and chronic types affecting children and adults alike, with forms such as Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML), Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL), Chronic Myeloid Leukemia (CML), and Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL), each presenting unique treatment challenges; and

WHEREAS, early symptoms—such as fatigue, fever, swollen lymph nodes, and bruising—call for timely diagnosis and treatment, with advanced diagnostic methods like blood tests, genetic analysis, and imaging guiding tailored care; and

WHEREAS, significant risk factors for leukemia include genetic predisposition, chemical exposure, and lifestyle choices such as smoking, underscoring the need for preventive education and awareness; and

WHEREAS, treatments such as chemotherapy, stem cell transplantation, targeted therapies, and new approaches like CAR-T cell therapy offer improved patient outcomes and renewed hope; and

WHEREAS, continued research and clinical trials advance understanding to develop innovative therapies, raising survival rates and enhancing lives;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, JOSH STEIN, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby proclaim March 2-8, 2025, as “LEUKEMIA AWARENESS WEEK” in North Carolina, and commend its observance to all citizens.
