Governor Proclaims National Infertility Awareness Week

NATIONAL INFERTILITY AWARENESS WEEK

BY THE GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA

A PROCLAMATION

WHEREAS, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention CDC, one in seven women struggle with infertility; and

WHEREAS, the World Health Organization and American Medical Association define infertility as a disease; and

WHEREAS, infertility affects women and men equally and does not discriminate based on race, religion, sexual orientation, marital status or socioeconomic level; and

WHEREAS, some people experience infertility as a direct result of medical treatment for another condition, most often chemotherapy or radiation for cancer; and

WHEREAS, family-building options include adoption and medical treatment, such as in vitro fertilization and third-party reproduction; and

WHEREAS, cost and lack of insurance coverage create barriers for many in our state who want to start a family; and

WHEREAS, raising awareness of infertility and the barriers people who want to start a family may face is the first step to removing these barriers; and

WHEREAS, North Carolina joins dedicated volunteers, health care professionals, and members of the infertility and family building community by raising awareness;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, JOSH STEIN, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby proclaim April 20-26, 2025, as “NATIONAL INFERTILITY AWARENESS WEEK” in North Carolina, and commend its observance to all citizens.
