Today Governor Josh Stein and First Lady Anna Stein joined Commissioner of Agriculture Steve Troxler for a visit to the North Carolina State Fair to spotlight the state’s agriculture industry.

“North Carolina’s agriculture industry is the backbone of our economy, and the State Fair is where agriculture gets to put on a show,” said Governor Josh Stein. “Whether you’re here for the food, views, rides, or prizes, there is something for everyone at the North Carolina State Fair.”

“The State Fair is a celebration of our state’s agricultural heritage and its important role in North Carolina’s economy,” said First Lady Anna Stein. “It’s a chance for people to meet the farmers, producers, and artisans behind it all, discover their new favorite food, or find a community they should visit and explore.”

“We want consumers to understand that our state’s agriculture industry produces the food that we enjoy every day,” said Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler. “Agriculture has been the foundation of the State Fair from its beginnings, and I am proud that it remains at the heart of the Fair.”

During the tour, Governor Stein and First Lady Stein tried fried lamb chops and corn dogs, explored the new Midway Events Center food hall, rode rides, and visited the Heritage Circle to spotlight North Carolina’s history of agricultural excellence in the grape and wine industry. They also attended the “Apprenticeship: Plumbing & HV/AC-R” competition to cheer on the next generation of skilled trades.

Agriculture is North Carolina’s No. 1 industry, generating an economic impact of more than $117 billion annually and employing 21% of North Carolina’s workforce – making up 1 in 5 jobs in the state. North Carolina produces the most sweetpotatoes and tobacco in the country and is consistently a top three state for Christmas trees, turkeys, trout, cucumbers, hogs, and peanuts. Last year, nearly 1 million people visited the North Carolina State Fair. Click here to purchase tickets through October 25.
