Today Governor Josh Stein announced the recipients of more than $24 million in mitigation grants from the Disaster Relief and Mitigation Fund as well as $16 million in grant funding to volunteer organizations active in rebuilding homes during the Governor’s Advisory Committee on Western North Carolina Recovery meeting in Marion. Disaster relief and mitigation grants support flood mitigation, transportation infrastructure resilience against natural disasters, and engineering assistance for local governments to identify and design shovel-ready projects.

Governor Josh Stein announced today that 145 projects in 66 counties across the state will receive more than $472 million in funding for drinking water and wastewater infrastructure projects. The awards will help cities, towns and counties strengthen infrastructure to better withstand future storms, improve existing drinking water and wastewater infrastructure, reduce contamination by forever chemicals, and identify and replace lead pipes.

Today in Woodfin, Governor Josh Stein announced $5.7 million in grants from the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality’s (DEQ) Flood Resiliency Blueprint to reduce flood risk in the French Broad River Basin. The announcement includes eight projects that will create new floodwater storage, restore and reconnect floodplains, relocate facilities and infrastructure out of harm’s way, and improve water quality.
This weekend, as Americans tune in to watch the Winter Olympics in Italy, Governor Josh Stein and First Lady Anna Stein are visiting several of North Carolina’s ski resorts to celebrate the mountains and the people who make North Carolina the Winter Sports Capital of the South. Today, they visited Appalachian Ski Mountain’s French-Swiss Ski College and will visit Beech Mountain Ski Resort. Tomorrow, they will explore the Sugar Mountain Ski Resort.

Today in Washington, D.C., Governor Josh Stein met with members of North Carolina’s Congressional delegation to thank them for their work and urge them to appropriate additional funding for western North Carolina hurricane recovery. Governor Stein also met with acting FEMA Administrator Karen Evans to express his gratitude for the approval of some Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP) applications and ask for continued collaboration. The Governor was joined by Western North Carolina Advisory Committee Co-Chairs Mayor Esther Manheimer and Senator Kevin Corbin.
Today Governor Stein visited Saluda to tour a home repaired by the Housing Assistance Corporation, a volunteer organization working to rebuild homes across western North Carolina. In October, the nonprofit was awarded a $300,000 grant to repair at least 20 homes in Polk, Henderson, and Transylvania counties as part of the state’s ongoing efforts to support volunteer organizations active in housing repair and replacement activities in western North Carolina.
