Today, Governor Roy Cooper joined U.S. Department of Education Secretary Miguel Cardona and North Carolina Central University students, faculty and staff to learn more about the work at the university to expand and strengthen mental health services at North Carolina’s higher education institutions.

Today, at the North Carolina Education Cabinet meeting, Governor Roy Cooper signed Executive Order No. 249 to establish the North Carolina Longitudinal Data System (NCLDS) Governance Board.

Today at 10 AM ET, Governor Roy Cooper will partner with the National Foundation for Governors’ Fitness Councils (NFGFC) to unveil new state-of-the-art DON’T QUIT! fitness centers gifted to three North Carolina schools. Perquimans County Middle School in Winfall, C.M. Eppes Middle School in Greenville and Northridge Middle School in Charlotte were selected as outstanding schools for demonstrating leadership in getting and keeping their students fit.

Today, the Commission on Access to Sound Basic Education adopted a resolution urging “all state bodies, entities, and agencies to take all necessary actions” to implement the Leandro Comprehensive Remedial Plan. The plan outlines the actions the State must take to meet its constitutional obligation under the Leandro court rulings of ensuring every student has access to a sound basic education. The Commission met virtually to discuss updates on the implementation of the plan. 

Across North Carolina, college students are helping out local governments and nonprofits thanks to a program started by Governor Roy Cooper’s administration to provide extra support as the state works to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Three North Carolina teachers have won Governor’s Educator Discovery Awards to help strengthen their work in the classroom, Governor Roy Cooper and the North Carolina Business Committee for Education announced. Gladys Johnson from New Century International Middle School in Cumberland County, Kathy Bosiak from Lincolnton High School in Lincoln County, and Gabrielle Farrington from Durham Public Schools in Durham County will each receive a $1,000 award to pay for professional development.
