On Thursday, May 23, 2024, Governor Roy Cooper signed a Type I state disaster declaration for individual assistance for Gaston County and contiguous counties that suffered damage from two EF-1 tornadoes and severe weather on May 8, 2024. This declaration will make assistance available to Gaston County and surrounding counties.

Today, Governor Roy Cooper toured Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune in Jacksonville to meet with base leadership and view ongoing military construction projects. During the visit, the Governor met with U.S. Marine Corps Colonel Ralph J. Rizzo, Jr., deputy commander for Marine Corps Installations East-Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, and other base leaders as well as several Marines to hear about current base operations and opportunities for the state to partner with Camp Lejeune to better support our military.
Today, Governor Roy Cooper hosted a Military Appreciation Month celebration at the Executive Mansion to honor servicemen and women. The Governor was joined by North Carolina Department of Military and Veterans Affairs Secretary Grier Martin as they celebrated those serving in the armed forces, their families and loved ones. During the ceremony, NC Air National Guard Senior Master Sergeant Lisa Robertson performed the national anthem and the Seymour Johnson Air Force Base Honor Guard presented the colors.

Last week, 17 individuals and three organizations representing 20 counties received North Carolina’s highest award for volunteer service, the Governor’s Medallion Award. The award is presented annually by the N.C. Commission on Volunteerism & Community Service.
Today, Governor Roy Cooper announced that the State is offering a reward of up to $25,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for the assault of Evernell Pittman, age 72.On January 2, 2020, Mrs. Pittman was leaving a restaurant on East Vernon Avenue in Kinston, when an unknown suspect violently attacked her with a metal baseball bat. The assault left her with a severe brain injury.
