Two years after Hurricane Florence, the North Carolina Office of Recovery and Resiliency (NCORR) remains focused on getting help to the people who need it most in storm-impacted areas of the state.

The U.S. Small Business Administration today granted Gov. Roy Cooper’s request for a disaster declaration for homeowners and small businesses that suffered damage from a 5.1 magnitude earthquake centered near Sparta in Alleghany County on Aug. 9.

Today Governor Roy Cooper signed a state disaster declaration for counties that suffered damages from the tornado on August 4, making additional assistance available to residents there.

North Carolina has seen more than its fair share of devastating storms, particularly in the past few years.

Hurricane Isaias made landfall at Ocean Isle Beach last night, bringing storm surge, high winds, heavy rains and tornadoes as it moved through North Carolina. 

Hometown Strong, an effort created to forge partnerships between rural communities and state government, will expand its focus to help all 80 rural North Carolina counties respond to COVID-19 and strengthen local economies.

As floodwaters rose this week along the Tar River to levels not seen since Hurricanes Matthew and Florence, water rescue teams from the Rocky Mount Fire Department put some new state-provided equipment into action, rescuing people stranded in their homes and vehicles.

The White House and FEMA have granted Governor Roy Cooper’s April 9 request for a federal disaster declaration for eighteen counties that suffered damages from severe storms, flooding and tornadoes in February.

Governor Roy Cooper has proclaimed May 3-9 Hurricane Preparedness Week in North Carolina and reminded residents that now is the time to prepare for the 2020 hurricane season.
