Governor Josh Stein today announced nearly $26 million in awards through the state's Stop-Gap Solutions program that will connect 5,161 rural North Carolina homes, businesses, and community anchor institutions in 66 counties to high-speed internet infrastructure by the end of 2026.
Today Governor Josh Stein joined education leaders at BEST NC’s annual North Carolina Education Innovation Lab to outline his priorities for recruiting and retaining excellent teachers across North Carolina.“If we truly believe that North Carolina’s kids are the future, we must make the job of educating them more attractive,” said Governor Josh Stein. “We’ve seen the impact of ideas that work, like Advanced Teaching Roles and the Science of Reading. We must invest in hiring and keeping the best teachers so kids in every classroom benefit.” 
Governor Josh Stein, North Carolina Department of Commerce Secretary Lee Lilley, and North Carolina Department of Military and Veterans Affairs Secretary Jocelyn Mitnaul Mallette are encouraging North Carolina employers to hire veterans and to apply for recognition with a HIRE Vets Medallion Award, an official program of the U.S. Department of Labor. The application period ends April 30, 2026. 
Governor Josh Stein today announced nearly $8.5 million in new infrastructure grants to support small business recovery in western North Carolina. The funding will assist 13 local projects through the North Carolina Department of Commerce’s Small Business Infrastructure Grant Program (SmBIZ), continuing the state’s coordinated response to the impacts of Hurricane Helene.

Secretary of the North Carolina Department of Information Technology (DIT) and State Chief Information Officer Teena Piccione today announced she is stepping down from her role in state government to rejoin the private sector. Starting April 6, former DIT Deputy Secretary Nate Denny will return to the department to serve as Secretary.
Today Governor Josh Stein joined business leaders and elected officials at the grand opening for PSA Airlines’ new headquarters in Charlotte. The new headquarters of the American Airlines subsidiary that operates American Eagle is expected to bring 400 jobs to Mecklenburg County and support more than $228 million in economic output in North Carolina each year.
Today Governor Stein joined the 200 Club of Wake County to honor North Carolina’s first responders. For 25 years, the 200 Club of Wake County has supported the families of fallen Wake County first responders through immediate financial assistance and scholarships for their children and spouses.“First responders run toward danger when others might flee, and they face real challenges in their work,” said Governor Josh Stein. “They deserve support for their sacrifices and pay that reflects their value.”  
Today at Visit NC’s annual tourism conference, North Carolina Governor Josh Stein celebrated the strength of North Carolina’s tourism industry.  
Today Governor Josh Stein kicked off his rural listening session series. He met with business leaders, local elected officials, and other leaders to hear their concerns and discuss priorities for strengthening their communities. Governor Stein also stopped by Flavors on Main in Marion to meet with the owners and learn about their experience.
